Mr. Ari addresses  CII Salem on "Construction & Real Estate Project Management"


   Mr. O. Arivazhagan "Ari", CEO, IIPM, was invited to deliver Chief Guest address on "Construction and Real Estate Project Management" organized by CII Salem jointly with Civil Engineers Association at Sona College of Technology Salem on 30th October 2014. He addressed the session on the topic of "Why EVERY Construction Company should have a Project Management Office (PMO)"?

In his speech to a gathering of nearly 100 participants including CII members, professionals from  Civil Engineers Association  & students, he explained about Project Management & Project Management Office(PMO)

He addressed the emerging issues in construction industry and created a level-sharing platform for easy exchange of knowledge and ideas.

In his speech, he emphasized the challenges faced by construction industry in India and how well these challenges could be managed by Project Management. He told that the Indian government has relaxed Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) policies in several sectors but not in construction industry as the other sectors like the IT industry people have learned about Project Management techniques & completing their projects on time within budget.

He also explained about the employability skills & the importance of Global Project Management. He addressed the importance of having strong project management knowledge and practice which would manage the major areas of Scope, Cost and Quality. He also spoke about the lack of assertiveness among the employees which creates a high Power Distance Index and quoted examples of the Indian and the Chinese culture. He spoke about the shortage of skilled project managers and engineering capability alone would not be sufficient.

He also highlighted that for High-Time bound Projects, using CPM/PERT the probability of exceeding time is more than 50%. He also spoke about the need for empower the employees which would lead to loyalty and dedication. His lecture covered a wide variety of topics in Project Management like Scope base line, Cost base line, Quality base line, Work Break Down (WBS) structure, Contract Management, Power Distance Index (PDI) etc., and elucidated about the essentials of 10 Knowledge areas in Project Management Body of Knowledge like Scope, Time, Cost, Quality, Stakeholder Management etc.

He clearly explained that Project Based Organization (PBO) like the construction companies needs the Project Management Office (PMO). PMO is a group or department that defines and maintains standards for Project Management within the organization. He also illustrated importance of PMO & the types of organizational structures like Functional, Matrix structures & Projectized.
